A Fishy Tale

Since moving into our first house recently, my partner and I have longed to have a small aquarium in the front room. There is a space where a fish tank cabinet would fit perfectly.

The only thing that’s holding us back somewhat is the fact that we know nothing about fish and keeping a thriving environment for them. We don’t want a simple tank & water setup you see, we would like to provide the fish a real environment with aquatic plants. It will also feel much more rewarding.

It’s just a little overwhelming with everything you have to think about, that we don’t know where to start. The only thing we have decided on is that we’d like a beech cabinet with the tank on top. We have visited a couple of aquarium shops, ooh-ing and aah-ing at all the pretty fish and weird species we will probably never buy because they need ridiculously warm temperatures to survive. It costs so much to keep the optimum temperature for many fish, and we want something that’s going to be fairly cheap to maintain, which invariably leads to very boring looking fish.

But on our next aquarium visit, we will ask for some advice and perhaps they will show us some interesting fish that prefer lower temperatures. I’m also interested to see the new gadgetry that can be bought like specialised filters. These sorts of products are often sourced at trade shows such as the Aqua trade show, something I’d love to go to, if only I was a retailer! Trade shows like this showcase an awesome array of new gadgets and equipment for aquariums to use and sell in their shops, as well as other bits and pieces like till systems from companies like Intelligent Retail.
I can’t wait to finally get our aquarium up and running. One thing I’ve learned is that it’s not a quick process – first you have to set up the aquarium and have it running for three weeks before putting any fish in it. Otherwise, the shock of freshly chlorinated water may kill off the fishies before you’ve had any time to admire them!

Protecting Against Downtime

Choosing the right web hosting can be a big headache for retailers and businesses worldwide. The trade-off between price and service is something that needs careful thought. If your priority is to have the very best web hosting quality where someone is always on hand 24/7, this kind of service is never going to be cheap.

I’m going to assume that you don’t want free hosting where advertising is put on your website. This never looks professional, you can’t control the content, and you’re asking for trouble since no real support will be provided to you. So the next thing to consider is the amount of bandwidth you will require. If your website is going to be constantly growing, you should opt for a web hosting package that allows for that. Also think about how video or image-heavy your website will be, as this will have
a big influence on your bandwidth limit. Most reputable large companies will never offer ‘unlimited bandwidth’, so avoid anyone that claims this.

The uptime of your web host should be at least 99.5% and they should provide a refund if the uptime falls below that figure. There is no point hosting a website somewhere that doesn’t have exceptional uptime, otherwise that is money lost for every minute your website is not accessible. Certainly don’t accept anything under 99%.

The technical support available to you should be round-the-clock. Rackspace are a company well-known for providing excellent service whatever the time of day, and even if it’s Christmas Day. You can always check up on a hosting company by emailing them at midnight or on a Sunday evening, requesting information. If the reponse only comes back the next morning, you can probably assume that the treatment will be the same if you’re a customer of theirs.

There are lots of other factors that are important when looking for web hosting, depending on your needs. For example, you will probably want email addresses on the same domain, and SSL facilities if it’s an ecommerce website. Check that your hosting company will provide these.

In terms of pricing, you do generally get what you pay for. As the old addage goes, if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. If you want the great service and support, you will need to budget for that.

Intelligent Retail use Rackspace as the hosting
company for the hundreds of retail websites they have created for customers. This give Intelligent Retail clients the very best uptime for their businesses, and ensures any problems in uptime can be dealt with immediately.

Computer EPoS Programs

If like us you’re retailers then you know the benefits of having a really good EPoS system for your business.  This can make the difference between getting home in time to go to bed (again) and missing dinner or having time to go the the cinema and actually enjoying life.

At the heart of this EPoS system is a computer EPoS program which controls all of the peripherals such as cash drawer, barcode scanner and touch screen whilst tying into the stock control system and other systems such as accounting software.

Intelligently designed computer EPoS programs will tie into many online selling channels such as Ebay and Amazon to give a truly integrated system where all sales come back to the shop till and the system should allow direct control listings across all external selling channels – this means that the retailer gets all of the benefits of time savings.

Selling girls baby clothes can be difficult sometimes, but using a good computer EPoS program can really help reduce stress, time wasted and means that the retailer always know what the business is doing.

Catimini Spring/Summer Dresses

catimini-spirit-floralI was so excited at the beginning of the week when I saw Catimini’s new Spring/Summer collection of dresses that I just had to blog about them. They’re simply stunning!

Catimini are a French brand producing up-market, vibrant clothing for babies and toddlers. They are one my favourite kids clothing brands because every item of their clothing is just so fun and colourful. catimini-baby-girls-urban

The thing I love most about Catimini’s distinctive range of clothing is that they have a very unique style to their peices, each has a beautiful French flair to it. They are very creative with their designs so you won’t find anything similar anywhere else.

Some of their dresses are a bit pricey but I think they’re definitely worth it. catimini-baby-girls-spirit
